Let me start by saying it has been a year since I read this book, so my recollection of some details may be hazy.It starts with a bizarre call to arms for the white race, which as a person of South Asian ethnicity I found interesting to say the least. It is also liberally sprinkled with racial slurs which are no longer politically correct.
However, if you can get past that (and I admit it did put me off for a bit), this is a book you will struggle to put down. The description of combat here and some of the author's exploits are incredible. There is a part where he describes how he did recon missions in broad daylight in no mans land. Balls of brass this guy. How he booby trapped a German foxhole is also a pretty good story.
His pride as an Australian soldier shines through, and also his pride in his fellow ANZACs. I would recommend this to anyone with an interest in military history.

"Over there" with the Australians R Hugh Knyvett 9781177770149 Books Reviews
Interesting read on the AU lifestyle and close ties to British during the WW1 era. Pretty mush like most other soldier survivors of the conflict. This isn't great literature.
A good read from a different respective on world war 1. We all know that they were there but do not hear about how they reacted and survived in the great war.
Very insightful on the fate of the Australian contingents during the war. Their personalities, interactions, and friendships are described under the most stressful of conditions.
Very educational, informal about another section of war that had been lost in time.
Chosen as I am reading Anzac history.
Rated highly because of war detail and trench life and specific incidents. Also experiences when injured. Best is this attitude to people and life, compassion and understanding politics, and human inhumanity and behaviour
Recommended to all who want to learn.
Why wouldn't I love this story? I had relatives who had fought in both World Wars and my admiration of their achievements will never diminish. Mateship is a wonderful thing and sometimes it's the only thing that keeps you going. You're there for each other. I loved the humour and their ability to overcome adversity. Typical Aussies. No wonder the Poms couldn't handle them. Would have been a real culture shock.
Interesting book first published during WW1, the book was written by a serving officer in the First AIF about the Australian military contingent. It has been written with a view towards the US market and has a certain flavour of propaganda about it. Despite that it is well worth reading for the many stories it contains, many of which are amusing.
